Interview with Marshall from Farewell

How did Farewell get together?
The band as you know us now started in 2005. We all met in Greensboro at shows and through parties and stuff. It's funny to think of how many times we crossed paths before we were actually introduced and then started Farewell. We all share a common drive for making the music that we do,soit just happened naturally.

How's the Warped Tour going? Had any major dramas?
Warped Tour 08 is freakin' amazing. We have had such a good time and we've become friends with some amazing bands. Drama is inevitable when you combine 8 guys, 115 degree weather, no sleep, and a 35 foot RV, but we all get along just fine. Thank goodness for the days off where we can go swimming and have some down time. We did have one rough day in Kansas City when it rained like crazy and ruined a lot of our merch.
What happened with your UK tour with Cartel?
I am not exactly sure what happened with the tour. We were told that Cartel had to cancel so they could go back into the studio, but then I read that their singer got married during the time the tour was supposed to take place. Regardless, it wasn't our fault and we were gutted that we couldn't go

When are you going to tour the UK?
I heard today that we may be coming over there in October with You Me At Six. Only time will tell... =)

What was the influence for song 'First One On Blog'?
The song is basically about how we stick together when things get tough. Our band has had some rough times coming up in the music scene, but we have stayed strong and pushed through, and have made our dreams come true time after time. This song was written for the underdogs, to inspire and push them to want more.

What are your views on blogs?
We are 100% pro-blogging. I think it's a great way to keep people
informed. Lets face it, the internet is SO importan t these days, so why not embrace it.

How did you hook up with Epitaph?
Brett found our band using myspace, and he really liked the connection between the artwork and the music. He called me while we were recording in Chicago, and the rest is history. We had been talking to labels for 2 years, but finally signed once Epitaph joined the mix.

How did you approach writing and recording 'Isn't This Supposed to Be Fun!?'
It was a very casual process. We weren't signed when we went to record, so there was no pressure to make a "certain" record. We were just recording the songs we had written so we could get them out to our existing fans. I guess we hadn't really even thought about reaching new ones at that point.

How are you finding touring with the cost of gas
continually increasing?
Thank goodness we have killer merch! haha. Otherwise we'd probably only be able to tour when we're supporting huge bands. I don't think that kids these days have any idea how much it COSTS THE BANDS just to get to their city. It costs us between 80-100 dollars an hour to drive and that doesn't include the six of us getting paid and paying our managers.... SO
kids...support bands and buy their merch and Cds! It s so important
these days.

Who do you consider your influences and peers?
We are all huge Green Day and Weezer fans. Blink 182 also had an impact on us as well. I think we're all just fans of good pop music. We try to write music that we'll like forever. I know that our style of music fits into the "scene" right now, but I am confident that our music can outlast the trends of today. The Beach Boys did it, so we can too...

What do you eat whilst on tour?
We eat whatever we can! Some of us try to eat healthy, but for the most part we eat what we can get for cheap or free! Lunchables are a constant in the RV though. Plus we cookout almost every day, so thats always fun too.

Get Happy Tour- BIC- 21/10/07

With Bowling For Soup, Bloodhound Gang, Zebrahead, Army of Freshman

The hall is already filling up nicely when Army of Freshman take to the stage. Kicking through a set full of pop-punk goodness including everything from a guest appearance from Jared from BFS and an impressive leap from the stage into the crowd from AOF lead singer Chris. Itâs a highly charged set that kicks of the show perfectly setting the tone for the rest of the evening.

Zebrahead follow on and somehow continue the pace started by AOF. Itâs a killer set full of great tracks like âPlaymate of the Yearâ and âAnthem.â In an impressive display of crowd interaction the band manage to get the crowd to join them in sitting down before jumping back into song.

Bloodhound Gang are as much a show as they are a live band and without doubt they have to win the award for dirtiest live band. Managing to pull along a large trolley with a 20+ stone man on it is quite an impressive feat, its even more impressive when done with just your penis. While not for everyone they were definitely entertaining and played all the classicâs âBad Touchâ, âThe Ballad of Chasey Laneâ and âFoxtrot Unicorn Charlie Kiloâ

Bowling For Soup are a band who Iâve loved since I was a teenager so saying Iâm excited is a bit of an understatement. With humour slightly more family friendly than Bloodhound Gang its an amazing show with the band blasting through a set that includes everything from my personal favourite âBelgiumâ through to their latest single âWhen We Dieâ I can safely say this tour has been branded perfectly Iâve never left a how with such a massive grin on my face, hereâs hoping for another UK Get Happy tour soon.

With Straylight Run and Zolof The Rock and Roll Destroyer

Tonight is kicked off by Zolof The Rock and Roll Destroyer. Although the crowd clearly arenât all that familiar with there stuff it doesnât take long for them to get into it. I mean its hard not to when a band have so much pop goodness packed into there songs.

Next up is the wonderful Straylight Run. Now Iâll admit Iâm a big fan but even so they blew me away. They seem to own the stage with a really subtle presence that holds your attention. Starting off with âExistentialism on our Prom Nightâ and finishing the things off with âHand In The Skyâ itâs a superb set the goes by far to quickly. Hereâs hoping for a headlining tour soon.

Motion City Soundtrack burst onto the stage and blast through a set list comprising of tracks from all 3 of their albums. Itâs a great set and itâs easy to see why there getting more and more popular, incredibly catchy pop-punk songs with a live show to back it up. With the release of their third album over here this could be the time they break into the big leagues in the UK. Favourite tracks had to be âCapital Hâ, âThe Future Freaks me Outâ and âEverything is Alrightâ

Yup thats right Radiohead are giving away there new album. Well not quite. You can chose how much you pay plus a small card fee. So if you want to pay a couple of quid or a tenner its upto you. I'd love to see the numbers on how much actually pay, you can pre order it here Alot of people are saying its all over for labels now, more will follow Radioheads example. I however am far more skeptical. Radiohead got where they are through the help and backing of there label. Sure other big artists like Coldplay, Foo Fighters etc could do this but the smaller and even mid size acts couldn't. They simply don't have the money to finance recording an album let alone promotion. All the current big artists might follow suit but any future artists won't be able to. The majors will adapt and have future big acts locked into such long contracts it won't be an option.

Now Iâve never been a big fan of InMe, nor have I ever really disliked them. There one of those bands whoâs stuff Iâve been aware of and if played on a radio Iâd listen to but I wouldnât necessarily go out and buy it. So when their third album landed on my door I didnât really have high expectations. It would seem that I really should have had because âDaydream Anonymousâ is a cracking album. Somehow InMe have managed to conjure up some previously untapped muse and produce something quite interesting. Itâs a mixture of fast hard-hitting songs like âFar-Reachingâ mixed with slower songs like âTurbulenceâ and the more electronic â2nd Jonquilâ, both of which make nice breathers before the rock continues. InMe have defiantly stretched themselves musically with âDaydream Anonymousâ and it really shows, without a doubt the best InMe Album yet.

Beastie Boys- Brixton Academy 4/9/07

Tonight is set to be very special indeed, Brixton Academy has been sold out for weeks and thereâs an air of anticipation and itâs not surprising really The Beastie Boys havenât been in the UK for quite a few years and that was for a few arena dates so this could almost be called âintimate.â Now I know I shouldnât have to do this but just in case, Beastie Boys are a Hip Hop group hailing from New York who have been going for over 25 years. Theyâve released 7 albums, won a handful of Grammyâs and done countless world tours. If youâre a music fan of any sort you really NEED to own at least one of there albums.

The support band this evening are called Spank Rock, mixing old school hip hop with electronica they put in a solid performance and are entertaining enough but when your supporting legends like the Beastie Boys no one is really that bothered.

Beastie Boys first played at Brixton Academy almost 10 years ago and its great to see them back here, First person on stage is not the Beastie Boys but Mix Master Mike who shows off his awesome DJ skills with some mixing and scratching the likes are which are rarely seen. A minute or 2 later the Beastie Boys come on stage in all the suit matching glory. Tonight sets alternates between them being on there instruments and the 3 of them rapping with Mix Master Mike on the decks.

For those that donât know Beastie Boys have released a new album âThe Mix Up.â Whatâs unusual about it is that itâs purely instrumental, no vocals. So itâs no surprise that they play a few tracks of that album tonight. Now this was my first chance to hear these tracks and I can safely say there brilliant, from the tracks I heard tonight Iâm sure the album is a corker, some really cool chilled out stuff with the odd bit of rock thrown in for good measure. The Beastie Boys arenât just MCâs there superb musicians as well.

When most people think of Beastie Boys they think of 3 MCâs and itâs when its just them and the decks that they are just phenomenal. Mix Master Mike provides awesome backing with some brilliant scratching whilst Ad-Rock, MCA and Mike D rhyme like very few MCâs can. Beastie Boys are one of the ultimate Hip-hop bands and its easy to see why busting through songs like âBody Movin,â âSure Shotâ and âCh-Check It Out.â Its an amazing set which somehow rises to new heights with an encore that includes âIntergalacticâ and finishing on the phenomenal âSabotageâ making the crowd jump around even more. All in all a first rate performance with a 30 song set drawing on songs from there entire back catalogue sure theirs songs I would have liked to have heard but who cares when a band is this good.

With This Providence and Lost Alone

A little over a year ago I watched Paramore with 100 or so others in the Cardiff Barfly on their first UK tour. With there US fan base increasing at a steady rate, there following in the UK was small but dedicated. Switch forward to now and the band's latest album has gone top 40 in the US and UK and is well on the way to being certified gold. So it"s no surprise that this tour which includes, 2 dates at the London Astoria, is well and truly sold out. I was lucky enough to be attending the very first date of the tour at the Portsmouth Pyramids.

The venue is rammed, with a huge queue to get in, because of this not everyone has got inside for Lost Alone. Now I must be honest I'm not really familiar with their stuff and I had expected them to be yet another pop-punk/emo band that I"ve heard a hundred times before. However from the very start it was clear that I'm very much mistaken. Although they may look like any other emo band their sound is far more rock with old school punk elements thrown in to produce music that"s refreshingly different. Producing a really huge sound with just three members is quite impressive and they rip through a superb set. Definitely a band with a big future in front of them.

It seems that any band on US label Fueled By Ramen is hailed as the next big thing, not surprising really when you consider that in the last few years there roster has consisted of Fall Out Boy, Panic at The Disco, The Academy Is and tonightâs headliners Paramore to name a few. This Providence are one of the latest bands to be added to the roster releasing their album last year. Whilst I quite enjoy their album there live performance tonight seems lacking, with the songs sounding flat and all seeming to run into each other. Maybe itâs the fact itâs their first UK show but they need to improve their live performance because based on tonightâs performance theyâre pretty boring.

The crowd are screaming so loud Iâm half expecting the windows to shatter and its just for the roadies setting up the stage, so when Paramore finally come on stage the crowd erupts into a whole new level. Bursting into the first single of off 'Riot,â 'Misery Businessâ is a fast paced affair that gets the crowd worked into an even greater frenzy. Paramore are incredibly tight throughout the set and itâs an incredibly engaging performance from the entire band but unsurprisingly Hayley Williams is the focal point as she does make a very charismatic front woman. Along with the opener, stand out tracks for me were 'crushcrushcrush,â âPressureâ and âEmergency.â I would have liked to have heard their new UK single âHallelujahâ but I guess you canât have it all.

City Invasion- Mean Fiddler

Yesterday I jumped in the car and headed to London for City Invasion, having been downgraded to the Mean Fiddler it was far more intimate affair than I had expected. Due to my laziness and desire to sleep in I didn't get there till a bit late so the first band I saw was the peacocks. I recognized the name although I'm not familiar with there stuff, playing a solid mixture of punk and rockabilly, they play some surprisingly catchy tunes that myself and the crowd lapped up, and any band that uses a upright bass gets the thumbs up in my book.

Next up are the punk reggae super group that is Suicide Bid. For those unfamiliar with the group it features members of The Filaments, Sonic Boom Six, King Blues and King Pawn to name a few, having almost 20 members. With such a huge collective of talent there you might be the worried of it getting lost with so many members, instead however you get a true super group with the members taking the best elements from there respective groups to form one of the best bands of the UK and there performance showed this. Playing an amazing mix of punk and reggae tracks and with an unending line of alternating vocalists this was the performance of the day. Everyone in the crowd was going mad and if you didn't know better you might think this was the headliner. Its a shame that they don't play live very often because its a real delight.

Sonic Boom Six really have the hardest slot of the day for two reasons, firstly some members of the band have just been playing in Suicide Bid and secondly they have to follow up after such a stellar performance from them. This is not to say SB6 aren't good, they put in a very solid set ending on a real high with a great cover of Operation Ivy's Sound System.

This is supposedly the last ever last ever show for The Filaments which is a huge shame, after breaking up over a year ago they've played quite a few last shows and with a performance like tonight its easy to see why, there just so damn good. There one of the best Ska punk bands I've seen in a long time, there fast and aggressive set has everyone in the crowd leaping around like maniacs, playing everything you could want from a last ever show, it certainly was special.

The Business are late, having been originally slated to play between SB6 and The Filaments they end up playing after The Filaments. Now I'm not a huge fan of Oi I'll admit but this is just dire, fair enough there one of the bands that founded the punk scene in the UK but this was dire, its amazing that if you were relevant once that years later people will pay you to play when you have about as much talent as a monkey.

Conflict are up next and while I'm not familiar with there stuff they busted through a good set with the crowd lapping it up. From the same era as The Business but with a whole lot more talent they set things well before the headliners.

This is the last ever UK show for Leftover Crack so theres an air of anticipation, will there last UK show be a good one or not? Well everyones fears were soon put to rest with the band being on top form. Cranking through all the classics you'd hope to hear this was everything a last show should be including beer bongs and a massive stage invasion at the end much to the concern of security who were trying to push the crowd back in vein. Leftover Crack were amazing and did everything you'd want from a last show but the band of the day was Suicide Bid although when a band pulls together the cream of UK punk I guess thats to be expected.

Set Your Goals- Southampton Joiners

Last week I was lucky enough to catch the first date of the Set Your Goals tour at the Southampton joiners. First band up were Our Time Down Here, bursting on stage these guys are pure hardcore. So much energy on stage the crowd were loving every minute of it and there 25 minute set just flew by, awesome stuff. They impressed me so much that there going to be featured in the first podcast so keep your ears peeled.

Chaos Days are generic pop-punk and whilst there not bad they sound like so many bands out there at the moment. They were down a guitarist and that may have affected there performance, I would like to see the full act as there seemed to be potential there. I think to be a pop-punk band at the moment you need to be a bit different or very very good. Anyway about half way through there set I headed to the bar to get a drink.

No Trigger first came to my attention when they supported A Wilhelm Scream in January. When i first saw them what impressed me was that a band that fast could be so tight, and I had the same feelings about tonight. They really are one of those bands you have to see live, powerful vocals, fast guitars and blasting drums mean you just have to see these guys and the crowd seemed to agree. I think I'm gonna have to get some of there recorded material soon.

Tonights headliners Set Your Goals are somewhat of an anomaly there seems to be a debate as to what genre they are, pop-punk? Hardcore? well who cares when a band is this good. The two singers gives the band a very unique dynamic that just works so well and allows the band to maintain really high energy levels throughout the set. Like there friends in No Trigger the whole band is super tight and play everything perfectly. The crowd seems to love every minute of it, with people flying everywhere, its beautiful carnage. Highlights for me were Echoes, Old Book Misread and Latch Key. Theres still some UK dates left to go, so if you haven't got to a date yet then you really need too, this is without doubt one of the tours of the years.
